Neurasthenia (2002)
The Neurasthenia series began as a cathartic exercise after the events of September 11, 2001. These images illustrate the frustration and confusion I felt in response to the mass death and destruction caused by this apparent religious despotism. It also serves to illustrate my feelings about the paradoxical social conditions throughout the world.
Neurasthenia is described as, "nervous exhaustion," and was popularized during the late 1800's in England as a more refined form of hysteria, which was a term used mostly to describe a female state. It became common, (and perceived as somewhat sophisticated), among American men who were struggling with becoming successful capitalists in the late 19th century.
